Expectations for Class Participation = 40
pts = 40% of grade
General Participation
Participation is graded on a scale from 0 (lowest) through 4 (highest),
using the criteria below. I will give participation grades biweekly for
the first 10 weeks of class (i.e., you will have five participation grades).
The final four weeks will be made up of class presentations. At that point
you'll just be participating out of the goodness of your hearts to make
your classmates lives easier. :)
The criteria focus on three factors: preparation, evidence of interpretation
and thoughtfulness, and persistent involvement in the class. I expect
the average level of participation to satisfy the criteria for a "3".
Please also see the art of participation.

|
1 |
Present, not disruptive |
| |
Tries to respond when called but does
not offer much |

Demonstrates very infrequent involvement
in discussion |
|
| 2 |
Demonstrates adequate preparation:
knows basic facts or ideas from the readings, but does not show
evidence of trying to interpret or analyze them |
| |
Offers straightforward information
(e.g., straight from the case or reading), without elaboration or
very infrequently (perhaps once a week). |
| |
Does not offer to contribute to discussion,
but contributes to a moderate degree when called on. |
| |
Demonstrates sporadic involvement. |

Demonstrates good preparation: knows
facts or ideas well, has thought through implications of them. |
| |
Offers interpretations and analysis
of case material (more than just facts) to class. |

ongoing way: responds to other students' points, thinks through
own points, questions others in a constructive way, and offers suggestions
for further thought. |

| 4 |
Demonstrates excellent preparation:
has analyzed the readings exceptionally well, relating it to readings
and other material (e.g., readings, course material, discussions,
experiences, etc.). |
| |
Offers analysis, synthesis, and evaluation
of case material, e.g., puts together pieces of the discussion to
develop new approaches that take the class further. |
| |
Contributes in a very significant way
to ongoing discussion: keeps analysis focused, responds very thoughtfully
to other students' comments, contributes to the cooperative argument-building,
suggests alternative ways of approaching material and helps class
analyze which approaches are appropriate, etc. |
| |
Demonstrates ongoing very active involvement.

Blog Expectations
I would like each of you to post an entry to our blog at least once a
week - on the topics listed in red, in the left-most column on the schedule,
under the week number. You will be given two points for each entry, given
that:
- The entry is, in fact:
- On topic, and
- Timely. It's important to me that we do this on a week to week
schedule - DO NOT try to do all of your blog entries for the semester
in one sitting.
- You have provided at least three sentences contextualizing and explaining
the entry for the rest of the class.
n.b.: Read through the weeks' existing blog entries before posting
your own! If someone else posts your entry before you have a chance
to enter it, you may comment on that entry if you'd like to get the
points, but the comments should be substantial (i.e., a paragraph or
two). You will not get points for referring to a page someone
else has already referred to.
