UPDATED July 2007: On the 14th and 15th of July 2007 we finished the final 77 miles of the Blueridge Parkway from mile post 392 to 469 by running 50 miles on Saturday and the remaing 27 on Sunday morning. The journey which began 7 years ago to complete the whole of the parkway at just under 500 miles (including a 10 mile journey on the Mitchell spur road) is now complete. It has been a team effort of a runner, a biker and the invaluable support crew that has accomplished the goal.

Scott Adams and Les Chaffin are teaming up again to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway. The event will have Scott running 200 miles along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Les and Scott want to raise awareness of the struggle that families are facing as they battle against one or many forms of cancer. We have dedicated this run in the memory of Jay Clark who recently passed away in May. Jay was diagnosed with stage four bladder cancer in 2000. With his every breath, Jay fought the disease in order to live the memories of life with his family and friends. Jay leaves behind his loving wife Kristin and his son Justin. Just after his death, his wife gave Les a memento from Jay that contained a motto that Jay loved and lived. It has become our motto for this event.

If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, you don't. If you'd like to win, but think you can't, it is almost a cinch that you won't; If you think you'll lose, you've lost. For out in the world you'll find success begins with a person's will. It's all in the state of the mind. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger and faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks he can. Walter D. Wintle

You can take part in this memorial run by donating to either the American Cancer Society or National Hospice and Palliative Care Organizations. In the battle against cancer each of these organizations seeks a living survival for the families who are facing the disease through treatment, education, and support. The run will be from July 27-30 along the Virginia portion of Blue Ridge Parkway. Links to the course maps are located below.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our sponsors

To make this run happen is more than just the runner moving 200 miles. Les Chaffin will remember his best friend Jay by biking the 200 mile distance and providing support the entire way. On Friday and Saturday Amanda Kotecki will be running or biking portions. Working behind the scenes providing logistics support, Advil, and clean socks will be Mindy Adams and Kristin Chaffin. The run would not be possible without their support of this endeavor.

We will be covering the distance from Waynesboro, VA to Fancy Gap, VA. Come back to the website during the run in July to track our daily progress. We hope that you will able to support us as we seek to find a way to endure and live beyond this disease.

If you wish to contact Scott or Les you may write to them at adams@ils.unc.edu and chafl@ils.unc.edu
