Notes on Courses or Sections of Courses with the Number of Students Enrolled Above 50

Fall 2002

 

Albany

ISP 100 Internet and Information Access enrolls 448 undergraduates, mostly freshmen and sophomores (Part of the University*s general education curriculum).  ISP 301 Information Environment enrolls 141 undergraduates, mostly sophomores. 

California 每 Los Angeles

Core class taught in one section.

Emporia

1.  511 每 Internet Basic Technology; 2.  2 MLS classes begin in Oregon.  Both taught by two instructors.

Florida State

The over 50 data is potentially misleading because it contains enrollment data for web-based courses for which sections are based on mode of enrollment rather than number of students accommodated.

Illinois

LIS 201 每 introductory required course in undergraduate minor in information technology studies; LIS 380 每 M.S. degree core required course on-campus offering.  Course has large lecture plus 7 discussion sections.

Indiana

Sections of L155 ※Information Resources in Journalism§ (an 8 weeks undergraduate course) 每 maximum in any section was 55.

Louisiana State

One course has more than 50 students because this course has multiple sections since the course was taught as a distance education course.

McGill

Courses over 50 students are required courses that all MLIS students must take as part of their MLIS degree.

Michigan

501 (a foundation course) had only one lecture, resulting in 115 students, 504 (another foundation) had two sections; both with more than 50 students.  539 had 56 students and 682 had 54 students.

North Texas

Courses for the various programs available.

Pittsburgh

Three of the courses are introductory courses taken by general University undergraduate students.  The other course is a required course for all Master of Library & Information Science students.

South Carolina

Five televised courses.  Two of these are required core courses, and three are courses required for school library media certification.  All of these courses have mentors assigned.

Syracuse

One is a credit graduate introductory course for all three degree programs, taught by three faculty.  The other is a course cross-listed with the School of Education.

Texas

180J 每 Introduction to Information Studies; 386.13 每 Introduction to Information Technology & Professions (both required for new students); 322T 每 Children*s Literature, undergraduate service course (2 sections).

Texas Woman*s

LS 5013.20 每 Information Storage Retrieval, enrollment 59; LS 5813.20 每 Information Professions, enrollment 64. These two courses, with more than 50 enrolled, are part of the entry-level core curriculum.  We have seen an increase in enrollment for the online program this fall.

Washington

Core course.

Western Ontario

Two sections of one required course taught by one instructor who chose to teach both sections in one combined session.

Wisconsin 每 Madison

The two classes are core courses.  One is a required course master*s students must take in their first semester (Fall only enrollment) and has 80 每 100 students every year.  The other course will not be taught in the Spring and many of the enrolled students plan on graduating in May or August of 2002 so they must take this course at this time.

Wisc. Milwaukee

250:  Internet Planning and Implementation (53 students enrolled).  This is an undergraduate level course.
