How I Got My First Job - speaker panel

Thanks to everyone who came to our Fall 2008 speaker panel, and mega-thanks to our four speakers, who took time out of their busy schedules to share advice with those of us still in the SILS trenches:

  • Marian Fragola (MSLS 2008) - Humanities Coordinator, Durham County Library
  • Emily King (MSLS 2008) - Coordinator of E-Learning Services, Undergraduate Library, UNC Chapel Hill
  • Michael Peper (MSLS 2008)- Librarian for Mathematics and Physics, Perkins Library, Duke University
  • Jill Robinson (MSLS 2007)- Librarian, ITT Technical Institute, Morrisville, NC

2008 ALA "Student to Staff" Winner Announced!

Congratulations to Lisa Gregory, this year's UNC-SILS "Student to Staff" representative at the ALA Annual Conference this summer in Anaheim, CA. Lisa was chosen for the strength of her essay detailing the reasons she wants to be a part of this year's ALA Annual Conference.

In being chosen to serve in the "Student to Staff" program, Lisa's conference registration has been paid and she has been awarded a housing and transportation stipend. She will also receive a small per diem in exchange for a total of 20 hours of work during the conference. We are excited that such a great candidate (and a terrific person) has been selected to represent us in Anaheim, and we know that it will be a great conference for everyone who attends.

Please visit ALA's website for more information on the Annual Conference, and learn more about the "Student to Staff" program here.

SCALA helps 3 more SILS students go to Anaheim

Congratulations to Lindsay Ritter, Rachel Jorgensen, and Nani Vaidhyanathan, who will attend the 2008 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA from June 26-July 2.

These SILS students are the lucky winners of SCALA's Conference Registration Drawing, which covers registration fee expenses for 3 second-year SILS students. We are happy to assist Lindsay, Rachel, and Nani with their trip to Anaheim, and we know the conference will be an enjoyable and valuable experience for them!

2008 Annual Book Sale a Success!

SCALA's Annual Book Sale was held Monday, March 31 - Wednesday, April 2, 2008—and what a book sale it was!

Many, many thanks to everyone who helped make the sale a success, especially our volunteers and everyone who donated or bought books. Thanks to your support, we raised more than $1500! The proceeds will go toward SILS programs and the Internationalist Prison Books Collective, a local, non-profit, all-volunteer organization that provides books and other reading materials to prison inmates.

Reference Brackets: New Reference Champions are Crowned

On Friday, April 11, 2008, SCALA and ILSSA held the first ever Reference Brackets event, a competition to test the question-answering skills of some of our best and brightest SILS reference hounds! The scores were close through several rounds of competition, but in the end, Sean Chen was named 2008 Reference Brackets Champion. Amy Johnson was our (very close!) runner-up. Both champs received prizes and bragging rights until next year.

I Read Banned Books!

4 October 2007: 2 Amazing Banned Book Week Events

Dramatic readings, discussion, free food, candy, prizes, Happy Hour and fun!

It's Official!

In 2007, SCALA became an officially recognized UNC student organization. This gives us the power to book spaces in the Student Union for meetings and programs, seek funding for events, and many other benefits.

MARCH MADNESS!

Congratulations to SILSter Lindsey Ritter for winning this year's ACC Tournament pool! She will not only receive a prize, but also bragging rights until next March.

Have you seen our Diversity poster?

Check out the poster that SCALA created to advertise our 2006 exhibit highlighting several key moments in Manning Hall history. This photo represents one of the 20 or so pieces which was on exhibit in Manning. We felt this was a timely project, seeing as SILS will be looking for a new home in the next few years, as the program expands in scope
