More Proxy fun and Filter busting

For the class demo I showed the program Proxyway featured here. In addition to this little proxy program there were also several others proxy programs shown including Multiproxy and Sockscap.

Multiproxy is not a bad program especially since it is free. It has not been updated in years but still seems to function as intended. Set the default browser setting to 127.0.0.1 port 81. You will then have to test proxies taken from the lists supplied from sites such as stay invisible or samair. Save your list of good proxies (10 is plenty and try to use only those that are the fastest) in a simple text file which you can then import into the multiproxy. You can find the import feature under proxy server list menu: import. Once you have the proxies loaded MP is ready for action. This proxy is interesting in that is uses multiple proxies simultaneously to retrieve pages, so it would be hard to know just what proxy is loading what page.

Sockscap is another proxy designed for use with socks proxies. Setting this proxy up can be more of a challenge but if you have trouble do a little Internet searching for help. The site listed above should be the most help.

Finally just a little word on filters, those annoying measures put up by certain individuals, organizations, and governments in an attempt to limit the free exchange of data, information, and ideas. Recently I visited a relative who had placed a certain well known commercial "family" filter on their home box. Out of curiosity I began to play around with the filter to see just how good it was. The filter is designed so traditional browser proxies will not defeat it. I tested several known good proxies in an attempt to load a page of known pornographic nature but was unsuccessful. A quick search revealed the filter blocks not only sites it claims to but also sites that will show how to defeat the filter.

This was a minor problem but not an insurmountable one. Within 15 minutes I had located a page running the program known as the circumventor a handy way to beat these ridiculous filters. Ideally one loads the circumventor on a known computer that is filter free and easily accessed like a friend's box. It is then a simple matter to run the filter box's browser through the circumventor box and presto, you have beat the filter! This should work on all personal, corporate and governmental filters. Also if you don't have a box to load the circumventor on try this link which is a current circumventor cgi proxy.

NOTE: there are now some filters that claim they can beat cracks like the circumventor, so maybe look around for some other filter defeaters! Other links that may help Beat filters and Peacefire.
